Borrowing

How do I find books in the library?
You would start your search with the library catalogue. Training will be arranged if you need it, just ask your faculty librarian. Once you have the shelf number and know which library has the book, you need to go to the shelves and locate it. The books are arranged according to the Dewey Decimal classification and faculty colour, e.g. Engineering = green.
How many items can I take out and for how long?
Depending on your status:
Status Number of items Loan period*
Undergraduates 6 items 3, 7 or 14 days
B.Tech 6 items 3, 7 or 14 day
M.Tech and D.Tech 12 items 3, 7 or 30 days
Staff 20 items 3, 7 or 60 days
Alumni 2 items *Please note conditions of membership* 3, 7 or 14 days
Individual 2 items *Please note conditions of membership* 3, 7 or 14 days
Corporate 3 items *Please note conditions of membership* 3, 7 or 14 days

Can someone else check out materials for me?
Only under special circumstances of extreme illness or disability. Arrangements must be made with your faculty librarian who must approve your request or contact your Branch Librarian.

Requesting

How can I get an item that someone else has checked out?
You will have to place a hold on the item. Speak to the staff at the circluation desk, make sure you have the correct details of the item. This 'hold' will prevent the item from being renewed for another period by the other borrower.
May I call the library and ask that an item be collected from the shelves and held for me?
Unfortunately this service is not offered by CPUT Libraries
CPUT Libraries do not have the items I need, where else can I get materials from?
You have two options:
1. Through our Inter-Library Loans service. This service allows you to request materials from institutional libraries, nationally and internationally. See the ILL online request form and submit your request. For further information go to the ILL page
2. PG students and staff have access to materials from the CHELSA group.
