Article Processing Charges (APC) and Open Access Publishing: Article Processing Charges (APCs)

Article Processing Charges

An article-processing charge (APC), also known as a publication fee, is a fee that is sometimes charged to authors to make a work available open access in either an open access journal or hybrid journal. This fee may be paid by the author, the author's institution, or their research funder.

Wiley: A practical guide to publishing open access with Wiley

Wiley journals

Our agreement with Wiley allows you to publish gold open access in hybrid journals for the first year of the agreement – meaning you have 1,400 journals to choose from. In the second year of the agreement, this will be expanded.  It includes the following:

  • Reading access to all Wiley journals. Participating institutions that were on smaller packages have been upgraded.
  • A single fee covering all the reading and publishing services included in the agreement.
  • Researchers may publish accepted articles open access in Wiley’s hybrid journals from the start of the agreement in early 2022 up to a cap which is 20% more than the previous equivalent research output. A handful of fully closed journals are excluded from this entitlement.
  • Should authors agree to publish open access, they will retain their copyright with a CC-BY license and there will be no author facing article processing charges (APCs).
  • From January 2023, as part of a pilot scheme, researchers will also be able to publish in Wiley’s fully gold open access portfolio, including journals published by Hindawi.

Emerald Publishing

Emerald Publishing manages a portfolio of nearly 300 scholarly, peer-reviewed journals as well as over 2,500 books and 1,500 teaching cases. Journals are indexed in both Web of Science and Scopus. The Emerald eJournals Premier database is a comprehensive, cross-disciplinary journal database featuring the latest peer-reviewed, international research in both established and emerging areas of interest. Smaller subject collections are also on offer.

The Emerald/SANLiC agreement for 2022-2024 is a Read & Publish transformational open access agreement that provides read access to the latest version of your subscriptions as well as permitting eligible corresponding authors to publish a capped number of articles as open access at no extra charge in the Gold and subscribed Hybrid journals to which you subscribe.

The caps (for the consortium as a whole) on the number of articles that can be published at no extra charge for the years of the agreement are:

  • 2022 = 111
  • 2023 = 134
  • 2024 = 158

This works on a first-come-first-served basis; Emerald will be able to track the number of articles published and will keep the SANLiC office informed.
