Standard MLA Abbreviations

Standard abbreviations may be used in your citations.

A list of appropriate abbreviations can be found below:

et al and others
No number (series)
p page/pages (book)
para paragraph
Pt part
rev revised
Suppl supplement
Vol volume (book)

Place Names

  • The names of US states and territories are abbreviated in the reference list; use the official two-letter U.S. Postal Service abbreviations and enclose the abbreviation in round brackets.
  • To cite locations outside of the United States, include city and country names.
  • The names of Australian states may be abbreviated using standard Australia Post abbreviations.
  • Enclose state and country names in round brackets
