Circulation FAQ: Fines + Damaged material

My Library Card allows you....
  • to see the number of books you have out on loan
  • to check the titles, library you got it from and shelf numbers of loans you have borrowed and returned
  • to renew your current loans
  • to check the fines on your account

Fines

What are the fine amounts?
There are different fine structures for our different loan categories. Fines for  Open shelf books and audio visual material are R1.00 per day, late Short Loan books are R2.00 per hour and  R50.00 per day
How do I pay fines?
You can pay your fines at any of our CPUT Library branches at the Circulation Desk or by EFT using the following CPUT Banking details:

Can I appeal a fine?
Yes, you can appeal a fine, but have the necessary evidence that you’ve returned your library items on time.
I found an item I already paid to replace. Can I return the item and be refunded?
The replacement cost (excluding the handling fee and / or any fines) will be reimbursed if lost items are returned within one month of payment
I lost an item I borrowed from the library. What do I do?
Report lost or stolen items to your Librarian or Circulation Desk staff. The replacement cost (plus handling fee and fine) will be obtained and you will be notified personally or via email. You then have to settle the debt before the final assessment results are being released
I have library materials on my account that I already returned/never checked out. What do I do?
Report it to your Librarian or Circulation Desk staff who will then make a note of the incident, search the shelves and keep in touch with you.

Damaged library materials

What happens if I lose or damage library materials?
Contact the staff at the circulation desk and report the damage. g Given the extent of the damage, you will be held financially responsible for the replacement of the item.
What constitutes damage to a book?
  • writing in the book
  • using highlighters/underlining text in the book
  • dog ears
  • tearing/cutting/removing pages from the book
  • water damage
  • food/drink damage
